Sweet Mama MelOwner | Sweet Spreads, LLC.
I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. My mother is an entrepreneur so I guess part of her rubbed off on me. I just didn’t know what it was that I wanted to do. My parents owned 2 travel agencies and were very successful, though when purchasing travel on the Internet became more popular in the early 2000’s they sold the businesses. They transitioned into work as social workers, and quickly opened up their own social work agency helping the disabled. I guess it’s in their blood. Like myself, my family loves to travel and that’s tough to do when you have to ask someone else for vacation time…when you’re your own boss, you make the time to vacation and just make sure your work is done.
Even though my parents owned their own business, they were a little hesitant at first when I left my job. I had grown very quickly up the ranks in my position and was making great money for my age. Though they understood the desire to be your own boss they stressed to me the risk, long hours and hard work it would take to make Sweet Spreads a success. Since I started, my parents have been behind me 100% and even more so now as they have seen the early success of my business coupled with my love and passion for what I am doing each day. They are so happy to see how quickly Sweet Spreads has grown and see the potential in the company.
Alex has always been into health and fitness, competing in college in several natural bodybuilding shows. When we first started dating, one thing that struck me was his use of natural nut butters. Eaten by the spoonful between meals to hold him over until the next one. After a while, I picked up some of his eating habits (helping me lose over 90 pounds). Unlike Alex, however, I needed some variety in my meals. I quickly found many flavors of nut butters on the market and became hooked.
Fast forward a bit to when coconut was starting to hit the market. Coconut water, oil and even butter were becoming the hottest new craze because of their amazing health benefits. I have always been a huge coconut fan but usually in some kind of candy or dessert that my dad would make for the family. One day in my kitchen I was playing around with Alex’s theory of food prep–basically that “if you combine items you like it will taste good.” Kind of the like the stir fry concept but Alex applied this to things you wouldn’t have thought went well together, but more often than not they did. I combined some coconut butter with a dessert I was making and man it tasted good. So it dawned on me….Would there be a way to flavor coconut butter the same way that was done with other nut butters? After what seemed like months of trial and error, Alex and I found something we LOVED.
Check out all the flavors!
